Fair use rationale for Image:Becky Corrie St.jpg

edit

Image:Becky Corrie St.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Informal review

edit

Let me start off by saying, excellent work on the article Raintheone! It's easily among the best from the several hundred strong Coronation Street WikiProject. I really think you should look at taking it to WP:GA and seeing if it can be listed as the project's first Good Article :D With that goal in mind, I'm going to go through it and flag up anything that occurs to me, because I know how much it can help just having a fresh pair of eyes on something sometimes :)

The first thing that grabs me is the article title. The article is located at Becky McDonald, but the external links at the bottom call her both Becky Granger and Becky Grainger. I clicked through to see what title the pages they link to use, and itv.com uses McDonald, while What's on TV seems to be a dead-end. I can see from the article edit history that I redirected this to Granger several months ago based on WP:COMMONNAME, but I'm happy to accept that enough time has passed that McDonald is now her common name. Simple enough to change the ITV link to McDonald, but I can see the Granger vs. Grainger spelling debate over her maiden name has been raised before on this talk page. Are there any sources we can use to support one way or the other how her maiden name should be spelt in the opening sentence?

An off-shoot of checking the revision history is that I notice User:Jonb981 executed an improper cut and paste merge with content from Becky Granger back in September. Ideally, in order to preserve the full edit history, I think this needs attention from an administrator at WP:CPMV to merge the two articles properly. It was so far back now I honestly have no idea whether it can be rectified or not, but it's worth a shot.

Now, to the article content itself. One thing easily slipped in is, ideally after each character is mentioned for the first time, the actor name should be included in brackets beside it. So for example:

Becky first appeared in the series as the obsessive former friend of Kelly Crabtree (Tupele Dorgu), whom she framed for theft at Underworld. Kelly encountered her out on the streets living rough while she was out to dinner with Lloyd Mullaney (Craig Charles) in early 2006.

I see this has been done once with Slug / Marshall Lancaster, but if you could do it with all the characters, that would be great.

The lead should ideally be a bit longer, and should summarise the entire article in brief. It's not quite at 32kb, but I think 3 paragraphs would be about the right length, one to summarise conception & development, another for storylines and a third for reception.

Reading the Background section under Character creation, there's an issue similar to something I mentioned at the talk page for Maria Connor, in that it's actually written from an in-universe perspective. Ideally the creation & development sections should be almost entirely from a real-world perspective. I'd recommend just bumping this down into Storylines, as well as the part in Relationships which recants the in-universe development of her relationship with Steve:

After her reconciled relationship failed for the second time she agreed to marry Steve after he proposed again. On the day of her wedding to Steve nerves got the better of Becky ahead of the event and after drinking plenty of champagne to calm herself. She gets so drunk that at the altar she passes out and the Priest refuses to marry them. Steve later lies to Becky about the wedding, leaving her under the illusion she was married. Michelle later revealed to Becky she never got married. The broke up a couple of times over the wedding, Amy's mother but both times reconciled. Steve and Becky later set a new date for their wedding.

The most pertinent parts to include in that section are the commentary from Kelly and Gregson. If you think the Creation section looks a bit on the short side with just the Casting part there, I'd be tempted to combine it under one general Development heading with the next two subheadings, so you've got:

==Development==
===Casting===
===Personality and identity=== (suggest perhaps ===Characterisation=== as an alternative subheading?)
===Relationships===

The Storylines section I've only skimmed over, because it does need a bit of editing. It should be written in the present rather than past tense, because technically the episodes all still exist, and so for instance the episode where:

Steve later went to the police station where he was confronted by DC Hooch and realised that Becky was innocent and vowed to get the best lawyers possible and fight against DC Hooch.

...for anyone watching repeats, international broadcasts, potential (however unlikely) home media releases etc, in that episode Steve will always go to the police station, where he will always be confronted by DC Hooch... Apologies if I sound really patronising trying to explain this lol, but I used to really struggle to understand the rationale behind it myself, given that soaps are continuous. Aside from tense, wrt length I'd try and tighten it up a bit if at all possible. It's about 1,500 words which is about the maximum acceptable, but given that she's only been around a few years, I think it could be condensed a bit further. Just give me a shout if you want a hand with that at all, for reasons unknown I really enjoy cutting down plot summaries to only the most pertinent facts.

Other than that, I'd just have a careful check through for instances of colloquial language (at one point the actress is referred to as 'Kat Kelly' rather than just 'Kelly') anything that sounds borderline original research or synthesis (eg. Evident on-screen that their relationship had made the character of Becky develop and face up to her new found responsibilities.) and just other minor things such as trying to place references at the end of sentences, or at least after punctuation of some kind, rather than just in the middle of sentences. On the subject of refs, something's gone a bit wrong with the formatting of ref 29, though I'm not entirely sure why it's not displaying properly. With the other refs, if you can try and list the authors by the surnames first, that would be great (either using separate parameters in the cite templates eg. 'first=Kris |last=Green', or just 'author=Green, Kris') and also wikilinking the works and publishers where applicable. For instance, you'd cite The Sun as: 'work=The Sun|publisher=News Group Newspapers' but Digital Spy is just 'publisher=Digital Spy'.

Phew. I know it looks like I've pulled up quite a lot, but to be honest 50% of it is just minor stuff, and 50% is the fact that I over-explain and type far too much, lol. Plus, like I said on my talkpage, I miss working for the Project, and I'd love to see you get this to GA. Take all of my comments with a pinch of salt, and feel free to ignore absolutely anything you disagree with. While I'm thinking of it, there are a couple of handy tools here [1] and here [2] which I have bookmarked and try to run over articles from time to time just to check for dead refs and dab links, which might come in handy in the future. If you want me to take another look after you've polished the article up a bit, just let me know and I'd be glad to :D Happy editing! Frickative 10:02, 15 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Afternoon. I've decided to take this review on, since you've been waiting a while and you're now top of the queue. I'll have a good read through first and I'll add my comments a bit later. - JuneGloom07 Talk? 15:49, 10 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for the wait, things were happening off and on WP. Okay, Checklinks shows one dead ref (No. 40) and several refs that will need their urls checking and possibly updating. I've learnt recently that some of the Digital Spy refs have changed their urls slightly, so you just need to update them (if possible). Dablinks is fine. All of the images have the correct licenses, so they are okay.

Comment   Done - All refs working again, correct paths.

Now moving on to the article -

Lead

edit
  • She has remained since and is contracted to appear until 2011 - Something is not quite right about this sentence, I think it's missing a word. I think either She has remained ever since... or She has remained since then... would sound better. I'll let you decide that one.  Done
  • The opening sentence of the 2nd paragraph says Becky's storylines have focused..., we then move onto personality and then we come back to Notable storylines include.... So, how about this; Becky's storylines have focused on her friendship with Roy and Hayley Cropper, which helped change public opinion of the character, and her relationships with Jason Grimshaw and Steve McDonald, with the latter producing two wedding storylines which were highly publicised by ITV. Other notable storylines have included her drunken rampages, two miscarriages and her desire to adopt a child. Then Becky is portrayed as a no-nonsense character, whose time on the show has been described as a journey. Viewers have seen her change from a "thieving ex-con" into a vulnerable woman. - Feel free to tweak them.  Done
  • Kelly has won five awards for her portrayal of Becky, and has been nominated for a further eight. I think Kelly has garnered various award nominations for her portrayal of Becky would be better. That way you don't have to keep updating the lead if she is nominated or wins anymore awards in the future.  Done

Characterisation

edit

I noticed James26's second point on your talk page and if you want to use his advice to tweak the section then go ahead. I was wondering if the third paragraph could be swapped with the second? What do you think?  Done

Relationships

edit
  • Becky's on-screen partnership with Roy particularly was successful -> Becky's on-screen partnership with Roy was particularly successful.  Done

Storylines

edit
  • Last paragraph - She starts feuding with Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford). - Is there a reason for the feud, why does it begin?  Done

Reception

edit
  • Instead of Kelly has won several awards for her portrayal of Becky. How about Kelly has won and been nominated for a variety of awards for her portrayal of Becky?  Done

References

edit
  • They need to be consistant, so either the work and publishers are all linked or they're not.
Comment I always link all, just noticed a clean up editor User:Ohconfucius changed them all and gave this reason: (per WP:MOSNUM, WP:Linking), I cannot revert it now for some reason.RAIN the ONE (Talk) 14:06, 11 July 2010 (UTC) UPDATED -   Done - I linked them all anyway. =)Reply
  • Some of the months in the accessdates were abbreviated (Aug, Dec, etc) and I think I've fixed them all (for consistency). Just have a quick scan to see if I've missed any.
Comment They're okay now, the editor changed all my work.RAIN the ONE (Talk) 14:06, 11 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • I see The Mirror is being used, I think it's okay because the info you're backing up are quotes from interviews. I had a quick look in the Reliable Sources noticeboard archives and the thread I came across didn't say it couldn't be used. It wouldn't hurt to have a look around for other sources just in case I'm totally mistaken though.
Comment - The mirror is the only one available with the text I wanted to use, I avoided it where possible.RAIN the ONE (Talk) 14:06, 11 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

There's no need to rush in getting things fixed. :) - JuneGloom07 Talk? 22:40, 10 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

How odd, I've just noticed the article was moved, but the talk page wasn't. When the GA is finished, we'll look into moving the talk page to match the article. - JuneGloom07 Talk? 22:51, 10 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
