General cleanup
editAlthough I am not familiar with this region or its history or language, I thought it would be helpful to try to get the English into a more idiomatic and understandable form. Now perhaps someone who is familiar with the historical details can correct any errors of interpretation I may have inadvertently made. Piperh (talk) 22:28, 18 May 2009 (UTC)
Orphaned references in Balkhash (city)
editI check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Balkhash (city)'s orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT⚡ 04:46, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

Balkhash (city) → Balqash – Majority of the maps I see it's spelled as Balqash which is in native Kazakh thus makes it a correct name. Even though the lake is spelled as Balkhash you still see the town using native Kazakh name which means I'm not trying to change the common name. Shadowzpaev (talk) 16:09, 31 May 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose move to Balqash (city) might be justified but Balqash means the lake. In ictu oculi (talk) 17:04, 31 May 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose move - simple google searches of the names in quotes shows book mentions of the city seem to favour Balkhash by about 30 to 1, and news mentions by about 300 to 1 Batternut (talk) 17:47, 31 May 2018 (UTC)
- Support move - I still see lots of mentions of Balqash in news and in books as well as in most of the maps. The lake and the city are different things. Not to mention Kazakhstan is switching to Latin so were pretty much gonna get the official name in Kazakh. Dinked2 (talk) 19:52, 31 May 2018 (UTC) — Dinked2 (talk • contribs) has made few or no other edits outside this topic.
- It may well get switched in future, but that's WP:Crystalball gazing (Wikipedia does not predict the future), so we wait and see because people are currently seeing the older spelling and looking for that. Batternut (talk) 20:45, 31 May 2018 (UTC)
- .. and take a look at Balkhash Airport (whose move I also reverted) - googling "Balkhash Airport" gets about 23,100 hits, but "Balqash Airport" gets 65 hits only. Batternut (talk) 21:19, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Kazakh spelling
editThe Kazakh spelling of Balkhash is Балқаш. The current format of "Kazakh: Balqash" might lead one to think a Roman alphabet is used in Kazakh rather than Cyrillic. 67.83.99.134 (talk) 22:50, 11 August 2020 (UTC)corpho
