I think default sort is a mistake for Arabic names

I think default sort is a mistake for individuals with Arabic names.

People with Arabic names don't inherit a surname, like people with an European do. Traditionally the closest thing they have to a "last name" is their father's first name.

And it is absolutely clear to me that it is a mistake to use default sort for the Guantanamo captives -- because the US Department of Defense can't consistently figure out what their names are.

Therefore I just reverted an edit where a well-meaning contributor imposed default sort on this individual.

Please don't impose default sort on these guys without discussing it first.

Could you please explain...

I've raised this issue elsewhere. This page recently had a reference to the NYTimes Guantanamo docket page for this individual. Many similar references have been added to dozens of other articles. The full text of the current reference was:

The contributor who placed this reference has told me that the references I use contain too many fields. In this particular case we can't put the author, because the page doesn't bear a byline. It doesn't bear a date. However I know the NYTimes brought this service online in November 2008. We do however know that it is published by the New York Times. So I am curious as to why the reference does not acknowledge that the New York Times is the publisher. Geo Swan (talk) 20:57, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

Thank's for your comment about the reference style. Things can always be improved. I will give it a thought and do research and try to improve it. By the way i wanted to remind you that you have not answered the posts and questions i left on our talk page. I know people are busy but you are doing a lot of edits on other pages... The identity section

The identity section of this article recently used bulleted points to identify some of the different names this captive has been known by. The advantage of using bulleted points is that it makes the different names line up. This helps readers see how they differ. The contributor who removed the bullets from the identity section of this article has also recently made similar changes to the identity sections of other articles. I suggest they should all be changed back to using bulleted points.

In this suggested rename you have asserted that you have "carefully evaluated" multiple secondary sources from search results. Please start "showing your work". Please stop claiming you have reviewed multiple secondary sources without stating what those sources area -- and linking to them. There is an overhead for renaming articles, and it should only be done for good reasons. Geo Swan (talk) 13:30, 3 January 2010 (UTC)
