Biography

edit

Ryu, The Runner, is a Brazilian trap artist from Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, making his mark on the national music scene, standing alongside well-known figures like Matuê and Teto. Despite his relatively recent entry into the industry, Ryu is rapidly gaining recognition for his distinctive style, blending influences from funk, rap, and the underground music scene, while always maintaining his unique artistic identity.[1]

From an early age, Ryan was drawn to urban musical genres, especially rap and funk, and admired underground artists who pushed boundaries. However, it was within the realm of trap music that he found his true artistic voice. The name "Ryu" had been a long-standing nickname, but he felt the need to set himself apart from other artists and characters who shared the same name. Inspired by his intense period of juggling work, studies, and music, he added "The Runner" to his moniker. This addition, influenced by figures like Tyler, the Creator, and the release of his EP Run, symbolized his relentless drive and dedication to his craft.[2]

Musical career

edit

In September 2024, Ryu made his official debut on major streaming platforms with the release of his first full-length album, SEMRÉH, under the Som Livre and GR6 labels.[3][4] The album features collaborations with notable names in the Brazilian rap and trap scene, including BK', Senndy, Jean Tassy, and Emitê Único, with production handled by Iuri Rio Branco, who has previously worked with artists like Marina Sena and Flora Matos. SEMRÉH stands out for its blend of introspective lyrics and diverse beats, creating a soundscape that reflects Ryu's personal journey, struggles, and aspirations.[5]

The album showcases Ryu's versatility, seamlessly shifting between aggressive and melodic flows, demonstrating his ability to navigate different styles within trap. More than just a debut, SEMRÉH is a statement of his artistic identity, positioning him as one of the most promising new faces in the Brazilian trap scene.[6]

Beyond his debut album, Ryu, The Runner is already working on several upcoming projects, including new collaborations with other artists. Though his career is still in its early stages, his impact on the Brazilian underground scene is undeniable, with a growing fan-base and praise from critics. The young trapper from Bahia appears determined to continue pushing boundaries and evolving his sound, always seeking new ways to express his personal and artistic experiences.[7]
