Please, include... edit

Chrome 28+ and Opera 15+ have since shifted from Webkit to Blink. Right now, it just says that Opera has shifted to Webkit. Thankfully, it shouldn't be that big of an edit, since the chrome and opera timelines are right next to each other.--Monkeydoesbetter (talk) 22:18, 29 January 2014 (UTC)Monkeydoesbetter.Reply

Needs to include www, lynx and other terminal mode browsers.

Like this? (see current version) --ADeveria 20:52, 29 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
And all the rest in browsers.evolt.org ? :) as well as some not yet listed there: like contiki (C64 and other 8-bit systems), Off By One, hv3 ( TKhtml), AWeb, IBrowse and Voyager (Amiga browsers), any Atari browsers, Oracle Powerbrowser (last release in late 1996). Not to forget NetCaptor, the first Trident based tabbed browser.
Tell you what, if you research what dates each browser had a major release, the version number of that release, the lifespan of the browser, as well as why the browser is significant enough to be added, I'll add it. :) Seriously, the research part takes most of the time, and I'd hate to clutter up the timeline with barely used and otherwise insignificant browsers. Also, I'd recommend you sign your posts, they are rather hard to recognize otherwise. --ADeveria 16:04, 24 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Contiki: development started in Q3 of 2002, 1.0 released in spring 2003, 2.0 released April 2007
  • Amiga Mosaic 1.0 (AMosaic) forked from Mosaic in 1994, completely rewritten as IBrowse , 1.0 in 2000, 2.3 in Jan 2003, 2.4 in Dec 2006, tabs were added in 1999. An OEM version included with AmigaOS 4.0
  • Aweb 2.1 in 1996, 3.0 in 1997, 3.2 in 1998, 3.3 in late 1999, 3.4 in 2001, open sourced, 3.5 in 2005, latest beta July 2007
  • NetCaptor (IE shell /w tabs) : last version , 7.5.4 released in Feb 2005, 5 in 1999, 6 in 2000, 6.5.0 in 2001 (two months after IE 6.0 public preview) , 7.0 thru 7.2 in 2003
  • Scope (tabbed Trident/Gecko shell) 2.0 (last release) in Jul 2001, 1.0 in Apr 2001, first public alpha version in Feb 2001
  • Networker (tabbed Trident/Gecko shell) 2.0 version in 2001, 2.5 in 2002, 2.6 in 2002, last release , 2.7 in 2003.130.230.93.16 15:26, 26 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Just in case anyone's wondering, I'm working on the next update. --ADeveria 11:25, 2 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yay! An update! Nice job. -Ice Ardor 22:43, 10 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
I stroked the browsers above which are included now! mabdul 13:23, 3 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

OS/2 Web Explorer edit

Another one that's missing: OS/2 had a native browser called IBM WebExplorer, it was basic but it was interesting in its day (circa 1996) for using a lot of threading. --128.220.101.100 (talk) 01:30, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I will add this (in far future) if I updated the article successfully. At least I need the release dates. (I already added the founded release dates and commented them in the article out) mabdul 18:08, 17 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Has been added :)

Errors edit

Flock 3.0 is based on Chromium, not Gecko. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.112.77.107 (talk) 17:38, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Was Flock 3.0 even released? Can't find any info on it. 3.5 has been added today and is now in the Webkit part. -- Sander (talk) 13:56, 4 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please update edit

Update Maxthon for 3rd version, ... Eh it uses two engines (WebKit+Trident) so, eh, try your best!

Made lines go to [Month] [year] edit

does somebody know how to create a variable instead of changing every actual browser with the new x2-value? mabdul 20:19, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

This page mentions SVG variables, but this one says it's not possible :( -- Sander (talk) 10:29, 9 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Changed Flock edit

I changed Flock a bit, but it might seem weird to others so I thought I'd let everyone know here. Starting with version 3 (only released as beta?), Flock is based on Chrome. Before that, Firefox was used as base. As a result, Flock now falls in the Webkit category instead of Gecko. I decided to split Flock into two lines, as opposed to altering the Gecko/Webkit backgrounds as before. Flock is now branched from Chrome, with an arrow indicating source code from the old Flock was incorporated. I feel this is better than before, but feel free to comment on this or to revert. If you want to revert, please keep the other trees I added in the latest revision. Sander (talk) 15:45, 11 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Isn't Slim and Green Browser both Trident-based? mabdul 20:10, 11 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yes, they are. I tried adding them twice, and both times it resulted in breaking the thumbnail. I'll try again later today. Sander (talk) 08:38, 12 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
I had a similar problem earlier (if you look in the history). This is a bug in the library which is used by mediawiki. This can be solved by changing the paths that are same or so. Look at my talkpage/(commons talk page) and or my comments on commons. Don't know I have time later I will check this again... mabdul 12:43, 12 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I remember :) Don't know if it's the same issue or not, but I was able to upload a version that works :) SlimBrowser and GreenBrowser are now correctly in the Trident part. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ZanderZ (talkcontribs) 10:53, 13 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
flock will be shut down! no support any longer :O see here: http://www.favbrowser.com/flock-is-dead/#more-7515 mabdul 132.199.117.208 (talk) 10:59, 13 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hm, interesting... I'll work on an idea I have about this. Sander (talk) 14:45, 13 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

IE10 edit

Recently, first Platform Preview has been released. SWFlash 21:28, 13 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Also, latest Chrome is v12. SWFlash 21:31, 13 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Platform Previews are not added, since they are alpha versions. Only gamma releases (stable) are included. For the same reason, Chrome 11 (beta) and 12 (dev) are not yet included. Sander (talk) 06:52, 14 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Then why Rockmelt b1 and b2 was added? SWFlash 10:04, 14 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Good point. I guess they shouldn't be. Sander (talk) 13:35, 14 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
yes and no: the first milestone is acceptable! I added a few minutes ago MME! mabdul 15:50, 14 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

I got an idea regarding Maxthon 3: the Trident timeline should be moved between Gecko and WebKit timelines and Netscape should be moved to the far bottom of Gecko. This can be done mostly with transforms, but it's very hard for me to do. SWFlash 16:51, 15 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Good idea. I will try this tomorrow. mabdul 20:00, 15 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think that causes more problems than it solves. Epiphany and Flock are in both Gecko and Webkit and that would not easily be possible if you move Trident in between... Sander (talk) 09:56, 18 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Also, line between STNC HitchHiker and Microsoft Mobile Explorer suddenly changes its color at the middle. It it supposed to be so? Here's image with it zoomed: http://i.imgur.com/TUi20.png SWFlash —Preceding undated comment added 23:12, 16 April 2011 (UTC).Reply

this is wanted. I will create next week the article and maybe (I don't know at the moment) there was an independent MME1(but MME2 was def. based on HitchHiker) so that I had to rearrange the lines again. mabdul 13:06, 17 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
See Mobile browser: "In 99 STNC was acquired by Microsoft and HitchHiker became Microsoft Mobile Explorer 2.0, not related to the primitive Microsoft Mobile Explorer 1.0." -- Sander (talk) 09:56, 18 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
No this statement is incorrect! MME1 was only a renamed HitchHiker. See a draft at User:mabdul/Microsoft Mobile Explorer. Not finished and with some false satements. I will correct the statement at mobile browser when I have the MME article nearly finished and get the whole picture. Have at the moment some white places on the map... mabdul 12:30, 18 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Internet Explorer 1 edit

Even if Microsoft since from the beginning has confused Spyglass Enhanced Mosaic and NCSA Mosaic, Internet Explorer 1 was actually based on Spyglass Enhanced Mosaic, which was developed from scratch by Spyglass and did not share NCSA Mosaic's code. So I think the line between NCSA Mosaic and Internet Explorer 1 should be removed.--Luca Ghio (talk) 15:44, 14 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for that! I've updated the file to include Spyglass Mosaic and changed the IE line. Sander (talk) 10:26, 15 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
If you want, you can add Enhanced Mosaic 1.0, released in May 1994 (source, taken from [1]).--Luca Ghio (talk) 13:46, 15 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Spyglass Enhanced Mosaic 2.1 seems to be the last version: in fact, Spyglass Enhanced Mosaic appears as same as in August 21st 1995, in February 1st 1997 (from here), and in 2000 (when OpenTV bought Spyglass). Spyglass focused on Device Mosaic, which someone should gather information about.--Luca Ghio (talk) 14:26, 15 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Added some more versions. Last version I found was 2.11, released on March 20, 1996, which is now the end of the solid line. The dotted line continues to the end of 1997, but maybe this can/should be deleted. Sander (talk) 08:00, 16 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Good!--Luca Ghio (talk) 20:00, 16 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Actually a screenshot for Spyglass Mosaic 2.11 is here. But where did you find the release date?--Luca Ghio (talk) 15:13, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Safari 4.1 and 5.1 edit

Safari 4.1 and 5.1 are missingBetatester wiki (talk) 11:56, 1 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

5.1 has been added a while ago. 4.1 was released on the same date as 5.0, so it's not included. -- Sander (talk) 18:08, 22 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Pocket Internet Explorer edit

The timeline for PIE ends with version 4 in 1999, but wasn't it included as the default browser for Pocket PC/Windows Mobile devices up until the release of Internet Explorer Mobile 6 with WM6.5 in 2009? --Paul_012 (talk) 06:32, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

The timeline is a bit original research for some browsers since we haven't references for all browsers. It is vastly improved and added with references. I was searching for some Microsoft Mobile Explorer references (and writing an article on that browser), but the PIE is a big problem. If you find some, be bold and add it or comment here at the talkpage and I will do it. As I know: the PIE was def. included in some versions even before the WM5/WM6, but I don't know which version nor which dates. mabdul 14:08, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
I had the same trouble (lack of sources) with PIE 4: some time ago, I tried to improve the Internet Explorer Mobile Italian article (I was careful to list meticulously every source I used, so the dates in the first table can be used for the timeline), but unfortunately I leaved unfinished the "Pocket Internet Explorer 4" section for that reason (but on the other hand Mabdul has his work cut out with his sandbox, too). One thing is certain: no further version there had been between PIE 4 and IE Mobile 6, and also I think the line for PIE should continue up to IE Mobile 6.--Luca Ghio (talk) 15:13, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Mozilla code not coming from Netscape Navigator edit

The timeline shows Mozilla coming from Netscape Navigator, but, as stated in this text, Mozilla was rewritten from scratch. ("where we're going" section, "Excuse #3" section) Am I wrong?--Luca Ghio (talk) 08:01, 21 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Interesting read. I've changed the line to a dotted line, but maybe it should be removed completely. -- Sander (talk) 12:59, 25 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Mozilla is not rewritten from scratch. To this day it still contains many pieces of legacy Netscape code, some even still listing the original NSCC copyright in the header. Wolfbeast (talk) 10:51, 12 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
I think a dotted line is the best option.--Luca Ghio (talk) 12:30, 12 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Add Firefox 8 edit

Can someone please add Firefox 8 to this image. I'm a newbie and not sure how to do it. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pparth (talkcontribs) 18:46, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please consider adding Pale Moon edit

It would be great if you could consider adding Pale Moon (web browser) to this timeline.

It's a direct fork from Firefox (started in the 3.5.2 era) and has been it's own development (with some re-basing of code in the earlier stages) since Firefox 4.0 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wolfbeast (talkcontribs) 10:54, 12 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

I also think it would be great if Pale Moon was added to this image. But as I am not skilled enough to do so without messing it up I will just leave the relevant info about it below and hope a more skilled user will come along and add it.
The first publicly released version of Pale Moon was the 3.0 version (released on October 4, 2009) and the other two millstone releases wear the 25.0.0 version which was the first version to be released independent of the Firefox release schedule (released on October 10, 2014) and the 26.0.0 version (released on January 26, 2016) was the first version to use the new web browser engine Goanna instead of Geccko from which it is forked.
Info about the history of this browser can be found here, and the release notes for all its versions can be found here and here. --Devin Murphy (talk) 01:46, 29 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Outdated image edit

Lynx is still in development, the latest stable version 2.8.9 is from July 2018, there is a preview 2.9.0 from January 2019. Konqueror was updated to version 5.0.97 in June 2018. iCab was updated to version 5.8.6 in September of 2018.--201.219.170.66 (talk) 18:35, 29 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

What's stopping you from updating it? ;) -- Sander (talk) 14:48, 5 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

SeaMonkey is already at version 2.53.7 at least. edit

In the image, SeaMonkey is shown as latest version at 2.4x. But it currently is at 2.53.7. Sorry I cannot update the image by myself, lack of skills and capacity, so I report the beeing-outdated here.

Mosaic Versions & Dates Incorrect edit

Fantastic graphic. Some fixes needed for Mosaic though:

  • NCSA Mosaic's first release was version 0.5 (not 0.1)
    • ...and it was in JANUARY of '93[1], so needs to be moved a little more to the left
  • Version 1 was released in APRIL of '93[2], so should be a third of the way into the year
  • Version 2 was released in NOVEMBER of '93[3]... not end of 1995
