Help request: What are the sticks next to the Japanese Sho (and other THOM images)?

I started a discussion at the Commons about the unidentified sticks in The History of Music (THOM) images. We need to 1. find out what those sticks are, and 2. add that info at minimum to each image's description (and preferably also to the images' captions in articles). The number of images containing sticks shows it is probably a way of showing scale. We need confirmation of this and the key to that scale.

The problem might not be only with the one image's description that I started with, but potentially those of ALL the images from THOM. My real-life limitations probably won't let me revisit this problem. So, I'm doing what I can now to bring attention to it. :)
