It's a photograph. It doesn't look like a modern photograph because this is very early color film, and the saturation levels of the color pigments are quite different from what we are used to. For similar examples, see the color images in the gallery for Russell Lee (photographer), who took the picture. Chick Bowen 23:59, 4 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the info--that's fascinating to know. I looked at the other pictures, and you know, they remind me of old National Geographics. I think I like the old pictures better than today. I've seen this happening in movies lately, that less and less color is getting used, and I think it's a shame.
