Answer edit

3+11 does not 13, it equals 14. And the question is terrible anyways. It's more of an English question than a math question, and the wording doesn't make sense. "determined by multiplying by x": multiplying WHAT by x? Even to a native speaker, this question doesn't make sense. You shouldn't need 3 equations to solve for 2 variables, anyways. Bad question all around.

___

It makes sense to me. Each term after the first is done by multiplying by x and adding y. Since it states 'after the first,' and that you must multiply by something, it must be multiplied by the previous number. The answer is indeed 14, but you don't need 3 equations to determine it, I am not sure where you're getting three equations from.

Equation 1: 55*x + y = 176

(176 - y)/55 = x

Equation 2: 176*x + y = 539

(176 * (176 - y))/55 + y = 539

30976/55 - (176/55)y + y = 539

563.2 - 539 = 3.2y - y

24.2 = 2.2y

y = 11

55*x + 11 = 176

x = 3

x + y = 14
