Umm, hate to be a spoil sport... but on the page Hardknott Roman Fort it says:

"The low walls of the fort were "restored" some years ago, a slate course showing the height of the walls before their rebuilding."

The stonework in this photo looks very crisp, unweathered and therefore modern to me... certainly not like it's been gathering moss or buried in the ground for almost 2000 years... I have a strong suspicion that this is what this slate is, and not actually a Roman damp proof course... but it's a lovely idea all the same! JohnGH (talk) 22:54, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
