I assume the story goes that the sword was thrown in the fury of battle, and embedded itself in the cleft. However, the chain shown in the picture appears to have been forged around the handle. That indicates this sword was mounted in the wall after it was chained. Perhaps that subterfuge can be justified on the grounds of public safety, but without admission and explanation, it calls the sword's authenticity into question.
