File talk:North America from low orbiting satellite Suomi NPP.jpg

Why is america disproportionately big in this photo?

  • I also thought at first the photo was a fake, but it isn't. This view results from the fact that the picture was taken with a wide-angle lens from a height of only 826 km above the surface of the Earth. This is comparable to taking a picture of a soccer ball from a distance of just 1.4 cm (assuming the soccer ball to have a standard diameter of 22 cm). From such a low orbit not the whole hemisphere is visible. Theoretically, an infinite distance is necessary to see an entire hemisphere, but in practice a distance of some 3,5 diameters (45,000 km in case of Earth and 77 cm in case of the soccer ball) is sufficient to provide a realistic hemisphere view, as the famous blue marble picture of Earth shows.
