Copyright status

@Tim riley: While I'm not exactly an expert on Copyright terms and such, the Bibliothèque nationale de France does specifically give the copyright status of this image as "domaine public", and it is clearly a collective work published both more than 100 years ago (even more than 120 years, come january) and more than 100 years prior to 1996 (the URAA date). That is, I'm about as certain as my limited expertise can become that this image is rightly in the public domain in both France and the US, and could therefore be uploaded to commons. --Xover (talk) 07:22, 22 November 2015 (UTC)

Very possibly. I avoid Commons if I possibly can, having in the past used so many images from it that were ruled unacceptable at FAC. Tim riley talk 08:16, 22 November 2015 (UTC)

Hmm. Well, without knowing the details of those instances it's hard to speculate, but in my assessment, the more common state of affairs is that Commons is far more strict about copyright and licensing issues than Wikipedia. If you've experienced problems at FAC image review with images from Commons my first instinct would be that those problems stemmed from insufficient review of the images in question (which problem is only exacerbated by keeping them local on enwiki, where less review and fewer experts are watching), rather than laxer standards on Commons. In fact, the usual problem from my observation is that editors from enwiki complain that their images are deleted on Commons where they would have been kept (typically under fair use) at enwiki. Thus my recommendation would always be to try for Commons if possible, and only use local files on enwiki as a fallback if necessary. Anyways, just wanted to let you know in case you were unaware.
