Rationale

edit

This image shows that H.S. Wong is a man with Chinese features. He was a Chinese photographer, according to The New York Times. Binksternet (talk) 14:59, 3 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ok. You're welcome to include that note in the article, but I don't think we need a picture to prove it. The non-free content criteria allow non-free images to be used only if they add significantly to reader understanding of the article; so far as I can see, we are easily able to understand the article about the photograph without knowing what the photographer looked like. So, what rationale would work? This image would clearly be kept if it were the only image in the article about H.S. Wong's life, and it still would do nothing more than show the reader what he looked like. Because there is no such biography article, the famous photograph article Bloody Saturday (photograph) is the next best thing to a bio about Wong. Binksternet (talk) 15:24, 3 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
That's not how it works. We must judge each usage on its own merits. You are right that an article about Wong could support the use of this non-free picture, but it does not immediately follow that an article about his most noted work could, too. J Milburn (talk) 15:33, 3 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I moved the photo to a new biography. Binksternet (talk) 16:20, 3 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
