Protected edit request on 14 November 2021 edit

On July 13, 2020, Macron reintroduced the red and navy blue French flag. Please modify the file by putting back the French flag used before the modifications of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing corresponding to : Flag_of_France_(1958–1976).svg

Thanks. NeeXxXoR (talk) 11:00, 14 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

@NeeXxXoR: The change you are looking to accomplish can probably best be occurred by modifying Template:Country data France. See here. –MJLTalk 20:42, 16 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Must be renamed edit

In early 2021, the Flag of France has changed. This file should be renamed to "Flag of France (1958-2021).svg", leaving a redirect behind until Template:Country data France is updated too. --MetalManiac, but not a fan of metal music (chitchat) 06:59, 17 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

On hold - this file is very widely used - I left a note at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject France for input on this. — xaosflux Talk 11:35, 18 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Kevin McE: (from another related topic). — xaosflux Talk 11:36, 18 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
As far as "renaming" goes, this is a local copy - so rename isn't likely the best fix here, just upload a new version. — xaosflux Talk 11:37, 18 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
MetalManiac's suggestion for renaming (and there is a proper process for renaming) is not a suitable one, I would suggest: the flag in question came into common use in 1976, not '58, the replacement by Macron was in 2020, not 2021, and it is not mandated. If there is a RM procedure, I would support something like Flag of France (light variant). Kevin McE (talk) 12:26, 18 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Kevin McE: this file is a bit special, in that it is a local copy that is used mostly by templates; we can upload a new version to this name and then all of the templates will make use of it. Certainly as many versions as are appropriate can be uploaded to commonswiki for use wherever that version is appropriate. — xaosflux Talk 16:08, 18 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I'm beginning to realise that. My comments about MM's rename were mainly about a new location for this file. And if this image is renamed, then presumably another image can be given this name.
Must the templates carry the image at this location, or does change require changing loads of flag templates' coding, or is there one element in the country data template that can be changed to make all the flag templates carry that image instead?
I can see that a normal RM procedure might not be the way to do it, but I am also sure that there should only be one centralised discussion rather than several in parallel. That is what I have tried to establish, and I am surprised that no-one else has joined in there yet: I would have thought it would be a hot topic. I think I have flagged it at the appropriate places. Where should such a discussion take place? There are presumably precedents, although not on such a widely used flag. Kevin McE (talk) 16:47, 18 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Kevin McE: I'm just here due to the immediate edit request - which apparently requires further discussion, so is   Not done. In general, the template(s) could just be updated to point to a new file. If the new file will have a very vary high number of local uses, a local copy should be uploaded and protected as well. — xaosflux Talk 19:59, 18 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

New file should be uploaded edit

There is a big argument in the talk page of the France article. I am not sure that is the place to have that discussion. This talk page in my view is a far better place to discuss the change. There is only one flag of France. It's simply a question of which shades of blue and red are to be used. Whereas the current french law makes it clear that the dark version is the official flag, I think it is appropriate and in fact necessary to update this file with an image that uses the darker shades. We could then create a new file titled Flag of France (lighter shade). That way we avoid indicating whether the lighter version is still in use, or when it became officially not the proper colours, until and unless it becomes clear that that shade was discontinued in 2021. We won't know for several years. I hope I am making sense here.Scoutguy5427 (talk) 13:21, 25 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

I had tried to point discussion to a central one at Template talk:Country data France, but that never took off. I would have thought (later reflection) that Talk:Flag of France would be more suitable, and there has been some discussion there: an additional fork here is probably not helpful. However, if you are going to discuss there, then evidence that "the current french law makes it clear that the dark version is the official flag" would certainly be an interesting contribution to the discussion, as the general perception is that French law is non specific about the shades, and presidential choice might be highly influential, but it carries no legislative authority. RFC in progress edit

There is an RFC in progress on Talk:France which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. Kevin McE (talk) 17:43, 21 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Protected edit request on 18 January 2022 edit

Please change the flag in this file to the this variant, per this RFC where there is a consensus that the "navy blue" flag should be generally used. BilledMammal (talk) 04:46, 18 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Not done The method to achieve this is not to overwrite this file, which is still usable in many situations including on the article Flag of France. Please update articles and templates to use the other variant where this is desirable. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:20, 18 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I see that xaosflux disagrees with me above so I have reopened the request. My concern is with any current uses of this file being changed unintentionally — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:23, 18 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
@MSGJ: as long as this is no longer controversial I'm not too concerned one way or the other, during the prior section I saw mostly that there needed to be more opportunity for input, that seems to have occurred. If I'm following everything correctly right now the current request is to overwrite our local copy of File:Flag of France.svg with the file from File:Flag of France (1794–1815, 1830–1958).svg, the RfC at Talk:France#RFC_regarding_the_flag seems to support this. — xaosflux Talk 15:35, 18 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Are we sure that there are no calls to File:Flag of France.svg which should not be changed? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:37, 18 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I can answer my own question. On Flag of France the infobox will have two identical flags, if this request is fulfilled. There may be other articles which specifically need the lighter variant. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:39, 18 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
There will be a few occasions, but there would be many more occasions where we would need to change the flag if we don't overwrite this file. Further, as there is a consensus that the darker variant is the "Flag of France", having this flag at this file is likely to lead to confusion in the future. BilledMammal (talk) 23:01, 18 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I fully agree. I do believe that we need to change this file to the darker variant per the RFC. By using File:Flag of France (1794–1815, 1830–1958).svg with its name the way it is, we're likely to cause confusion because it says the flag ended use in 1958. It would be better to rename the lighter variant to something else. 165.234.252.204 (talk) 14:32, 19 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Okay   Done. Please make necessary changes to Flag of France and any other article — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:24, 20 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Sample text edit

@MSGJ: Could you please revert back to the other flag? Your edit broke several pages including the Flag of France page which features both the Navy Blue and Marian Blue flags, and the talk page for France which also features both the Marian Blue flag and the Navy Blue flag. MarioSuperstar77 (talk) 13:24, 23 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

I had fixed it at Flag of France, but I see my changes were reverted. If you could link any other pages in article space where it is broken, I am happy to fix them as well. BilledMammal (talk) 13:28, 23 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Change back to the original colours edit

We already had a file named Flag of France (1794–1815, 1830–1974, 2020–present).svg. Going to its Commons page will result in the Marian Blue flag being displayed. SpinnerLaserzthe2nd (talk) 05:39, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

@SpinnerLaserzthe2nd and MSGJ: According to https://www.gouvernement.fr/charte/charte-graphique-les-fondamentaux/les-couleursFile:Flag_of_France_(2020–present).svg is the current flag, with the official colours.  — Johannes Kalliauer - contrib. 20:39, 9 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. Cherrell410 (talk) 21:12, 1 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
But the book in this URL (https://diffusion.shom.fr/ouvrages/ouvrages-generaux/album-des-pavillons-nationaux-et-marques-distinctives.html) uses navy blue in the appendix he provides. 2401:E180:8802:DABD:8076:A462:9264:790E (talk) 13:18, 23 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
In fact, my suggestion is to at least exchange the pictures of (File:Flag of France.svg) and File:Flag of France (2020–present).svg, and replace the current File:Flag of France (2020–present).svg Page renamed to File:Flag of France (1976–2020).svg 2401:E180:8802:DABD:8076:A462:9264:790E (talk) 13:25, 23 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Change hyphen (-) to en-dash (–) in "Other versions" for the 1975–2000 period, under the picture of the flag; also, in the same section, change from "29. Feburar 2020" to "29 February 2020", without a dot and misspelled "Feburar". Snowflake91 (talk) 21:03, 15 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
