Replaceability edit
Image passes per WP:NFCC#1 but may fail per WP:NFCC#8. However, I can create an article for the drug lord Eduardo Almanza Morales so the image can be acceptable. ComputerJA (talk) 09:15, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
- Being a hard to find does not mean this image is not replaceable by a free one, the guy is alive and so there is an opportunity for one to be created. LightGreenApple talk to me 20:04, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
- No, it is not reasonable. I will be quoting what Stefan2, who responded to one of my questions about these kinds of pictures on his talkpage: "I would assume that the only way of meeting the guy would be to commit some very serious crime yourself and then have the "luck" of being imprisoned at the same prison, but even then, you would not be allowed to bring a camera to take a photo of him, or access the Internet to upload a photo of the man. Assuming that the claim about his imprisonment is correct, I would assume that the photo is irreplaceable. It seems to fit the exception about imprisoned people." - Firstly bullet 1 of that list you link to says it is unacceptable to use non free images of people still alive, [...] provided that taking a new free picture as a replacement (which is almost always considered possible) would serve the same encyclopedic purpose as the non-free image.
- Secondly taking a new picture is just one way of obtaining a free image, others include obtaining an existing picture released cc-by-sa from the persons lawyers, friends, family, business associates or colleagues.
- Just because a google images search fails to find one does not mean one does not exist or can be obtained. LightGreenApple talk to me 20:12, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
- It is true that it may be possible to ask the copyright holder to an image to make it available under cc-by-sa. However, that holds for every image: you can always ask the copyright holder for a free licence. If that were how to interpret WP:NFCC#1, then Category:All non-free media would contain 0 files instead of 758,219 files.
- If it is found to be impossible to create a new image and if no one is able to find a free replacement, then it is typically assumed that no free replacement exists. That said, if a free replacement is discovered at some point, the unfree file would have to be deleted. --Stefan2 (talk) 00:59, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
