This image has been uploaded several times with conflicting info.

  • An image entitled Image:Berber Trade with Timbuktu 1300s.jpg was uploaded on 2007-03-02 by User:EhavEliyahu, with the description "Early photo of Berber trade with Timbuktu. From drawings out of the 1700s."
  • On 2007-12-21 it was moved to Commons by User:Magnus Manske's bot, with the description "Caravan approaching Timbuktu in 1853 (from Travels and Discoveries in Northern and Central Africa by Prof. Dr. Heinrich Barth, vol. iv, London 1858)".
  • Another version, de:Bild:TIMBUKTU-EINZUG.jpg was uploaded to de.wp by de:User:Peter Kremer on 2007-03-18, with the description "Beschreibung = Heinrich Barth nähert sich Timbuktu |Quelle = Barth, Reisen und Entdeckungen. |Urheber = E. Bernatz (?) |Datum = 1857" ("Heinrich Barth approaches Timbuktu|Source= Barth, Reisen und Entdeckungen.|Creator = . Bernatz (?) |Date = 1857")
  • This version is used at de:Heinrich Barth with the caption "Heinrich Barth (auf dem Pferd, in arabischer Tracht) nähert sich Timbuktu" ("Heinrich Barth (on the horse, in Arabic costume) approaches Timbuktu")
  • It is also used at de:Timbuktu with the caption "Heinrich Barth nähert sich Timbuktu, 7. Sept. 1853" ("Heinrich Barth approaches Timbuktu, 7 Sept 1853")
  • Another version, Image:TIMBUKTU-EINZUG.jpg, was also uploaded to en:wp by Peter Kremer on the same date, with the description "Author: unknown Source: Heinrich Barth, Reisen und Entdeckungen. Gotha 1858, vol. 4"
  • The caption at en:Heinrich Barth reads "Heinrich Barth approaching Timbuktu, Sept. 7th 1853". (Ignore the caption in the article on en:Timbuktu - I added that before realizing the contradictions.)

Could everyone please state exactly where they found their version of this pic, what its caption was there, and any references they used for other info about it!

Many thanks! JackyR | Talk 18:53, 28 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Greetings. The painting is a pretty common one in various books about Timbuktu. Originally, I had the photo and posted it until I could get a caption for it. I corrected the caption on the Jews of the Bilad es-Sudan page to the correct information. The book where I found the painting being described is Les Juifs a Tombouctou by Prof. Ismael Haidara. On page 11 it says L'arrivee a Tombouctou par is nord, 1853 (d'apres un dessin de H. Barth, Voyages et decouvrtes dans l'Afique septntrionnale et centrale 1849-1855)--EhavEliyahu (talk) 04:01, 10 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
