James Hope, Earl of Hopetoun, commanded the Hopetoun Fencibles. The 7th regiment of fencibles, the Southern Regiment, or Hopetoun Fencibles, existed from 2nd February 1793 to 1799. I assume this print is of him in the uniform of the Hopetoun Fencibles.
An engraving of three officers of the Hopetoun Fencibles, Major Pilmer, Francis, 7th Lord Napier, and Major Clarkson, by John Kay, Edinburgh, 1795, is held by the National Museums of Scotland. The uniform apppears to be the same as this portrait, thus confirming the regiment. Shipsview (talk) 11:16, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
