Winkler pincushion cactus (Pediocactus winkleri) is endemic to central Utah where it occurs in Emery and Wayne counties. It is associated with salt desert shrub communities on gravel or clay in the Dakota Formation, between 4,800 and 5,200ft. It was listed threatened in 1998 due to threats from collection for horticultural purposes, OHV related impacts, livestock and human trampling, mineral exploration and development.
