File:Whitehall Eddington 001.jpg

Original file(3,228 × 2,060 pixels, file size: 1.17 MB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

Description

Sepia postcard photo of Whitehall at Eddington, Herne Bay, Kent, England. A recent handwritten note on the back says: "House in lane opp Greenhill Sec. School". Postmarked 19 May 1940, and published by Scrivens of Herne Bay. Scrivens was a dynasty of photographers, so the identity of the individual author of this photo is unknown. The card is signed by (elderly?) Tom Ridout in shaky handwriting. The local Ridout dynasty ran a stationers and publishers in Herne Bay. The card is addressed to Mrs Watkins at St James (maternity ward?) on Whitstable Road, Canterbury, and Tom Ridout's message is "Hearty congratulations".

Points of interest
  • It is not know whether "Whitehall" - written on the front of the card - is the name of the house.
  • The house appears to be newly thatched; possibly the photo was taken in 1939 or before, when labour was available.
