The original must have been hand coloured as the manuscript annotated key indicates "Black - St[rea]ms, place names etc; Brown - Contours; Green - Bush; Yellow".
Map is both topographical and geological, showing contours and elevations and geological details. Labelled features include - Warm patches, Old Camp, Crater Rim, Old Jetty, Dam, Hot Springs, Old Factory. Notes of historical geological events and activity, include "1933 Crater", "Fumeroles depositing Sulphur", "Area covered with mounds of 1914 mudflow", and "Rock Slide".
Place names are supplemented with names of geological features including Flat Noisy Nellie Fumerole, Schubert's Erl King, Schubert's Fairy, and Big Donald Fumeroles.
The map is stamped "New Zealand Geographic Board" in the lower margin.
