English: French Algerian Anti-Nazi poster published in Algiers in June 1943 in issue #1 of the magazine "An Nasr" ("Triumph") representing Saladin (Salah al-Din) on horseback cutting a Nazi swastika in two with his sword.
  • The text in Arabic reads: يا الله ضد الصليب المعقوف عدو جميع الاديان which means "Oh Allah, against this swastika, enemy of all religions".
  • Illustration by André Mathiot, created in collaboration with a magazine pyblished as an official publication by the French exile government's military authorities during World War II. According to Copyright law of France, proprietary rights in pseudonymous, anonymous or collective works last for seventy (70) years after the date of publication (Art. L123-3). Copyright is assumed to have fallen into the public domain.
  • Note: Slightly enhanced copy of digital image; the original image has been modified to look better and visual distortions caused by JPG compression have been smoothed out.
  • The French Liberation Army (French: Armée française de la Libération or 'AFL) was the reunified French Army that arose from the merging of the Armée d'Afrique with the prior Free French Forces (Forces françaises libres or FFL) during World War II. The military force of Free France, it participated in the Italian and Tunisian campaigns before joining in the Liberation of France with other Western Allies of World War II. The French Liberation Army was created in 1943 when the Army of Africa (Armée d'Afrique) led by General Giraud was combined with the Free French Forces of General de Gaulle.
(...) magazines that were published during the war for North African Muslim troops, mainly Algerians, serving in the French armed forces. These publications were bilingual, with one cover and part of the texts in French, the other cover and texts in Arabic. Until the end of the war, they were printed by the Imprimerie Jules Carbonel in Algiers, a printing house that often published works aimed at building French understanding of the culture and languages of Algeria. The first of these magazines was given the name, Ya Allah! (...) The second magazine, An Nasr (Victory), started in June 1943, some seven months after Operation Torch, when American forces landed in Morocco and Algeria, and just after the Allied forces had driven the Germans and Italians out of Tunisia. It would continue publication until 1946.
