Description Henry Ossawa Tanner, American, 1859-1937, Landscape with Figures, 9" x 13", oil on canvas
Artist or Maker Henry Ossawa Tanner"
This painting is undated. I am arbitrarily dating it between 1880 and 1890 based on it being one of his earlier paintings, which were all sold to help finance Tanner's trip to France in 1891. The painting doesn't resemble Tanner's later work made in France. Also it has a signature in which he spelled out his first name; in later paintings
seen on Wikipedia, Tanner came to use H O Tanner as his painting signature; this indicates the signature is from the period in which he was experimenting with the signature. Earlier works have variations in his signature, as seen on Wikipedia.
