Summary

Description A Soviet Whiskey-class submarine is escorted by the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Carpenter (DD-825) and a Sikorsky SH-3A Sea King from Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 2 (HS-2) Golden Falcons after it was discovered near the USS Hornet (CVS-12) task group during exercises in the Sea of Japan on 6 January 1964. A Soviet trawler and a destroyer were also sighted by the task group during the exercises. HS-2 was assigned to Carrier Anti-Submarine Air Group 57 (CVSG-57) aboard the Hornet for a deplyment to the Western Pacific from 10 October 1963 to 15 April 1964. Note that the Sea King helicopter has deployed its sonar.
