Summary

Description
English: Tweeddale Court Originally the town house of the Marquises of Tweeddale and described by Daniel Defoe as one of the princely mansions of Edinburgh. From 1790 to 1808 it was the Head Office of the British Linen Company, later becoming the office of the famous Edinburgh publishers, Oliver & Boyd in 1817. A notorious murder took place here in 1806 when the British Linen Company's porter was fatally stabbed in the passageway leading to the courtyard. The thief made off with £4,392 in banknotes. His identity was discovered only on the eve of his execution for another crime.
