DescriptionTuchthuispoort in Frans Hals Museum.JPG
English: Picture of doorway in Frans Hals Museum. Formerly the entrance gate to the "Tuchthuis", or work house and prison. The gate was originally built for the "Pesthuis" that burned down in 1576. After the fire the Pesthuis was moved to the Leper colony and the workhouse was built inside the gate and opened in 1609, the same year as the "Oudemannenhuis" or old men's almshouse. The Tuchthuis was torn down in 1907 and plans were then made to preserver the gate and incorporate it into the newly renovated "Oudemannenhuis" that would become home to the Frans Hals museum. The date of the statue of Fortuna at the top is from 1679. The gateway itself is older.
