Summary

Description
English: Torpoint Ferry, "The Plym" This is one of the three chain ferries which crossed the Hamoaze (River Tamar Estuary) between Torpoint and Devonport. They were built in the 1960's. They all had their capacity increased in the 1980's by being "stretched". This involved cutting them into three pieces and inserting two new sections to make them longer. All three of these ferries have now been replaced by even larger ones. The first of these, "The Plym II" entered service on 23rd December 2004. Chain ferries pull themselves along on chains stretched across the river. There have been chain ferries on this river crossing since 1832.
