DescriptionToastrack tram (later classified Type B) and horse tram, O'Connell and Ward Streets intersection, North Adelaide ca 1909 (SLSA B8225 cropped).jpg
English: This image is a cropped version of Horse tram and electric trams North Adelaide about 1909 (SLSA B8225).jpg. The photograph was taken by professional photographer Gordon Walker at the intersection of Ward Street and O'Connell Street, North Adelaide. On the right of the image, in Ward Street, is a stationary 30-year-old horse-drawn tram, its lightweight construction evident, with upper-deck advertisements for Capstan tobacco and Lion flour. Behind, a new electric tram is travelling along O'Connell Street. Trams of this model, already having gained the nickname, "toast rack", were later classifed by the Municipal Tramways Trust as Type B. The photo was quite likely taken in 1909 since the electric tram line in North Adelaide was opened on 7 April 1909. People – a toddler, children and adults – are dressed in contemporary clothing.
The image is a cropped version of a 22 MB download from the State Library of South Australia website (see “Source”). A low-resolution download is available free of charge. I slightly improved contrast and other values and removed some blemishes, dust and chemical marks before uploading to Wikimedia Commons. The image with original flaws is available from the SLSA website cited above.
