English: London, England, c 1942. At Buckingham Palace 402144 Squadron Leader R. E. Thorold-Smith of No. 452 (Spitfire) Squadron RAAF, shows his DFC to his fiancée after an investiture ceremony. Thorold-Smith was killed in action during a flying battle in the Timor Sea, 15 March 1943.
