Summary

Description

The church is placed in a commanding position dating back to pre-Norman times. The original church was destroyed after the Conquest and rebuilt around 1100. It was extended in the early 14th century. The present church dates from the decorated period, with a 14th century western tower, south porch, nave with north and south aisles from the 15th century, and chancel, which was rebuilt in 1866 during general restoration of the church.

The tower is of four stages with battlements and crocketted pinnacles. There are squinches within the tower for a spire which was never built. The nave has four bay arcades with piers of four major and four minor shafts. There is a piscina at the east end of the south aisle. In the chancel there is a recess in the north wall with the effigy of a lady, possibly Lady Beatrice Hastings from the early 14th century. The chancel also contains a piscina and a sedilia which is restored.

The font dates from the original Norman church.
