Summary

Description
English: The ruins of the Telesterion at the Sanctuary of Demeter in Eleusis. In the background the modern city of Eleusis. In the distance, the Gulf of Eleusis and the island of Salamis. Eleusis, Greece. According to the information board: "Initiation into the Mysteries took place in the Telesterion, a large hypostyle hall with seats on all four sides, where the initiates watched the rituals. Then Hierophantes displayed sacred heirlooms, recited sacred texts, and conveyed to the faithful an optimistic view of life after death. The ancient texts containing scholia on the Mysteries are of an encomiastic nature and reveal that initiates underwent a transcendental experience."
