CENTRAL TELEGRAPH OFFICE, ST. MARTIN S LE GRAND. of a mile. The station is divided into different gal-leries, in each of which messages of a particular kindare dealt with. The total number of clerks employedin the Central Telegraph Station is 2911, of whom869 are females, besides nearly 600 messengers. From8 A.M. to 8 P.M. female clerks are chiefly employed, butfrom 8 P.M. to 8 A.M. only male clerks are employed.This large staff is managed by a Controller, onedeputy, and three assistant controllers, while the com-forts of the female staff are looked after by a matron.

Ill The work of this great telegraphic station isdivided into two important classes, namely, thatwhich deals with provincial and that which deals withmetropolitan telegrams. The work of the former istechnically known as the sortation of messages.All messages received at the Central TelegraphStation for re-transmission have to be either sent tosome part of London, or to some part of the country,or to some place abroad. If to some part of London,they are sent to the metropolitan gallery, or if abroad,to the foreign gallery or to the office of the CableCompany, by which they will be transmitted. Thosemessages intended for transmission to provincialplaces are sorted to one of the four great divisionsin which the provincial circuits have been arranged,namely, circuits for the west and south-west ofEngland and the Channel Islands; circuits for theeast and south-east of England ; circuits for the northand north-east of England and for Scotland; andcircuits for
