Heshould stand over a great deal of ground,and have the appearance of immense power.The height of the foreleg should not exceedthe distance from the elbow to the centre ofthe back, between the shoulder blades. Considerable importance is attached tothe freedom and activity displayed by theanimal in its movements. Deformed joints,or weakness, are very objectionable. Thehead should be strikingly massive andcarried low, the face short, the muzzle verybroad, blunt, and inclined upwards. Thebody should be short and well-knit, thelimbs, stout and muscular. The hind-quarters should be very high and strong,but rather lightly made in comparisonwith the heavily-made fore-parts.
