As a resultthe University ofToronto serum hasbeen found to be ex-tremely satisfactoryand consequently thewar office has ordereda large supply for itsimmediate use.Meningitis Serumprepared in this de-partment is alsobeing used with suc-cess in the C.E.F. inCanada. The splendid en-dowment for researchin the new Con-naught Laboratorieswhich was announ-ced by Sir WilliamHearst on the day ofthe opening of thelaboratories, has al-ready enabled thisdepartment of theUniversity to offerto undertake furtherwork for the Depart-ment of Militia andDefence in connec-tion with the infec-tion of war wounds,and concentrate vig-orously on war work. Several of thelarger institutions had already been au-thorized to form contingents similar toour British and Canadian Officers Train-ing Corps, and the War Department hadgranted to these the services of regularofficers to take charge of the instruction;but on the declaration of war these officerswere in most cases withdrawn and univer-sity authorities had to look elsewhere fortheir instructors. Naturally their firstthoughts were to obtain officers of theCanadian service with experience in Francewho had returned and were physicallyunfit for anything but home employment.
