Description

The Polish destroyer Piorun ("Thunderbolt") took part, along with several British destroyers, in the search for the German battleship Bismarck in May 1941. Piorun was the first of the destroyers to spot the German ship and exchanged fire with Bismarck for half an hour the night before it was sunk. Piorun's captain, Eugeniusz Pławski, transmitted the message "I am Polish" prior to opening fire....
