Description

The 'Lancastria' at Funchal, Madeira

A tranquil scene in Funchal Harbour. Launched in 1922 as the 'Tyrrhenia' for the Anchor Line, a subsidiary of Cunard, she made her maiden voyage on 19 June 1922. Just two years later she was refitted and renamed 'Lancastria'. From 1932 she was used exclusively for cruising until April 1940 when she was requisitioned by the British government as a troopship. On 17 June 1940 she was sunk off St. Nazaire by German bombers, with very heavy loss of life.
