Description
English: Brett's Wharf at Hamilton, Brisbane, ca. 1929

View of Brett's Wharf looking south towards the houses on Hamilton hill. A group of men pose in the foreground.

In 1928 the Queensland Government leased to Messrs. Brett and Company a part of the Port Estate at Hamilton on the Brisbane River and a subsidiary company, Brett's Wharves and Stevedoring Co. Ltd., was formed to take over the firm's shipping interests. In October 1928 plans and specifications were prepared for a wharf suitable for the largest ships visiting the port. Provision was to be made for the storage and handling of general cargo, including wool and large quantities of timber. A timber wharf was subsequently built equipped with two electric cranes. The contract for the wharf was let to Messrs. Taylor Bros. of Brisbane on the 1st December 1928. The first pile was driven on the 16th January 1929 and the first ship berthed at the wharf on the 26th July. This was the Texas Oil Company's tanker 'Australia' of 19 000 tons.
