In 1845 the Great Eastern Railway opened their line between London and Cambridge with a station here known as Stanstead. In 1890 it became Stansted, and exactly a 100 years later it became Stansted Mountfitchet to distinguish it from the forthcoming new railway station then being planned at Stansted Airport.
