English: 15th century image of St. Benedict with the "en:Vade retro satana" phrase
based on 1415 manuscript from Metten Abbey. The text on the staff reads approximately "Crux sancta sit m̀[=mihi] lux ñ[=non] draco sit mihi dux" (Latin for "The Holy Cross is my light, the Snake is not my leader"). The text on the scoll is "vade retro sathana nũq̃'[=numquam] suade m̀[=mihi] vana / sunt mala quæ libas ipsa venena libas." ("Step back Satan, don't tempt me with vain things / what you offer me to drink are evils, drink the poison yourself."). These verses have became a traditional Catholic formula to repel evil.
