If you have lived in an orange growing community like Redlands, CA, you know what a smudge pot is.
For those who don't know, they were used to raise the temperature a few degrees when a rare freeze hit the area. They were filled with heavy oil and lit. They gave off a thick black (smudgy) smoke which covered the groves and kept the temperature from falling too far. (They also made everything in the area very dirty!)
