English: USAT Sherman, U.S. Army Transport, painted by Captain Graves. Signed Graves1903. USAT Sherman, U.S. Army Transport. The ship was originally built by Harland & Wolff, Belfast as freighter MOBILE (for African Steamship Company, managed by Elder Dempster Line). Maiden Voyage London-New York, 20 Jan. 1893. Bought by Atlantic Transport Line (Great Britain) October 1896, limited passenger capacity was added. Bought by United States Government 1898; renamed U.S.A.T. SHERMAN. Converted to Army transport for use in Spanish-American War, later employed as troop transport to Philippines. She was bought by Los Angeles Steamship Co 1922 for $60,000. Renamed CALAWAII and refitted with accommodation for 203 cabin passengers in all outside staterooms at Los Angeles Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co at a cost of $300,000. Painted white with back funnels with crew of 121 for her first voyage Los Angeles Ð Honolulu, February 10, 1923. She proved to be a popular liner and sailed in tandem with CITY OF LOS ANGELES in Hawaii service until laid up in Los Angeles July, 1932 after 125 voyages to Hawaii. With MALOLO out of service winter 1932 she made two more round trip voyages to Hawaii returning to Los Angeles January 13, 1933. Sold for scrap in Japan and sailed for Osaka August 26 1933.
