English: The induced horizontal and vertical circulation patterns induced by a horizontal shear flow at the surface of the fluid.
The horizontal shear in the flow is indicated by the length and colour of the arrows at the earths surface. Due to the difference in the velocity, there will be upwelling on the right side of the flow and downwelling on the left side of the flow, which results in a vertical circulation pattern. There is also a horizontal circulation pattern that occurs alternately on either side of the current, these patterns are called eddies. The eddies have an internal circular velocity in the clockwise direction on the right side of the flow (blue circles) and anti-clockwise on the left side of the flow (red circles). On top of the internal velocity of the eddies, there is also a net movement of the eddies in the direction of the flow.
