English: shch-el-1 at Russian Railway Museum, adjacent Baltiysky Railway station, Saint Petersburg. shch-el-1 is Russia’s first diesel electric locomotive.
It was designed by Yakov Modestovich Gakkel and built by the Putilov Plant and the Baltic Shipyard. It was completed in 1924 and named "The Lenin Memorial Diesel Locomotive".
It was completed in 1924 and the actual diesel engine was salvaged from a sunken British WWI-era submarine which lay in the Gulf of Finland.
