Shambo_(bull).jpg(365 × 272 pixels, file size: 28 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

Author: Skanda Vale Hindu temple, Wales.

Source: The temple's website. It was available here in July 2007 when you clicked on "poster."

Description: Shambo, a bullock regarded as sacred by the temple. The British government announced it kill him on July 26, 2007, because he had tested positive for bovine tuberculosis. The announcement caused protests in the UK and India, to no avail.

Licence: This is almost certainly PD (see rationale below).

Rationale for use in Shambo edit

Though this image is subject to copyright, its use is covered by the U.S. fair use laws because:

  1. It has no commercial value.
  2. The image is almost certainly regarded as released by the authors. The temple monks used it on posters they distributed in an effort to get journalists and the public interested in the story. They asked members of the public to copy the image to get more signatures. Several newspapers used it. I wrote to them to ask if we could have a free licence for it, but they kept replying "yes, you can use it." I couldn't get them to say the magic words about releasing it, but I suspect that's because they didn't understand the question.
  3. The photo is being used for informational purposes only.
  4. The cow is now dead, so there is no way to obtain a replacement.
