A Lei Maria da Penha leva o nome da farmacêutica Maria da Penha Maia Fernandes, que ficou paraplégica após tentativa de feminicídio cometida pelo seu marido. Ele respondeu em liberdade e só foi preso 20 anos depois. O caso estimulou a apresentação de um projeto de lei sobre o tema, em 2004. O texto virou lei dois anos depois.

English: Plenary of the Federal Senate during a special session to celebrate the 17th anniversary of the Maria da Penha Law, the main Brazilian legal instrument to combat domestic violence.

The Maria da Penha Law is named after the pharmacist Maria da Penha Maia Fernandes, who became paraplegic after an attempted femicide committed by her husband. He responded in freedom and was only arrested 20 years later. The case stimulated the presentation of a bill on the subject, in 2004. The text became law two years later.
