The Alcazar, at the confluence of the Eresma and Clamores Rivers, evolved over several centuries. The site had probably been fortified in Roman times, or even earlier. The Alcazar was probably begun in the 12th century or earlier. It is about 100 m (330 ft) over the valley. The large tower was built by King John II in 1454. At this point, the Alcazar had something like its current appearance. There were further changes and deterioration. The castle was restored to its earlier state in the late 19th century.
