Summary

Comparison of Schiaparelli's 1888 map of Mars (File:Karte Mars Schiaparelli MKL1888.png) with a modern satellite map (File:Mars Géolocalisation.jpg). As was previously commented for Pioneer data,[1] there is a limited but meaningful degree of accuracy apparent in the old map. The location of Gale Crater (landing site of the Curiosity rover), whose features have since been named Aeolis Mons and Aeolis Palus after Schiaparelli's name for the feature, is noted with the green arrow.
