Sally Brown, Wildlife Biologist, Carlsbad Fish and Wildlife Office, Carlsbad, Calif.

Who is your Female Conservation Hero or Mentor? Rachel Carson.

Where did you go to school? University of Wyoming and University of California Riverside.

What did you study? Botany.

How did you get interested in conservation? When I was young my parents took me camping every summer in conserved lands all over the western United States and I grew to appreciate conservation while enjoying these beautiful and diverse landscapes.

What’s your favorite species and why?

Salt Marsh bird’s-beak (Chloropyron maritimum subsp. maritimum) is a plant that grows in coastal salt marshes in southern and central California and is a hemiparasite that derives some of its physiological needs from a host plant. It has flowers that look like the beaks of baby birds.
