Summary

Description

The U.S. Lines merchant ship SS Pioneer Muse foundered on Kitadaitōjima. The ship stranded during Typhoon Violet in October 1961. The crew of 57 was rescued by the attack cargo ship USS Tulare (AKA-112) and the helicopter carrier USS Princeton (LPH-5) on 8 October 1961, together with 27 crew from the 7.300 ton Lebanase merchant ship SS Sheik which had stranded a week before Pioneer Muse during Typhoon Tilda.

Kitadaitōjima is the northernmost island in the Daitō Islands group, located in the Philippine Sea southeast of Okinawa, Japan. After World War II, the island was occupied by the United States. The use of increased mechanization increased phosphate yields marginally until the deposits were exhausted by the mid-1950s. The island was uninhabited at the time of the shipwrecks until it was returned to Japan in 1972.
