Summary

Description
English: The Risley Tucker House, 283 Summer Street at Ashland Avenue, Buffalo, New York, January 2022. Designed in 1889 by the short-lived but prolific local architectural partnership of Marling & Burdett, this two-and-a-half-story Shingle Style house is unusual in many respects, most obviously the nearly complete eschewing (other than on the peaked gable dormers on the front façade) of the wood-shingle siding, ordinarily a prerequisite of the style, in favor of clapboard. Witness as well the stubby engaged corner tower whose conical roof makes unique angles as it intersects with the steeply-pitched side-gabled roof of the main portion of the building. The understated main entrance is tucked inside a small recessed porch. Risley Tucker (1848-1925) was a prominent businessman who, at the time of the house's construction in 1889, was working for his father-in-law John C. Jewett as executive secretary of the eponymous John C. Jewett Manufacturing Company, producer of refrigerators, water filters, and other home appliances. He left in 1902 to accept the post of president of the Buffalo Envelope Company. Tucker lived in the house until 1904, when he and his wife moved to a suite in the Hotel Lenox.
