Notes

Turkish Mauser Model 1893 bolt action rifle (GEW 98) Collection of Col. Albert Moeller Samuel, who served in South Africa with the 9th NZMR and during WW1 with the Wellington Mounted Rifles. During WW1 Major Samuel left New Zealand in command of 6th Reinforcements and joined his Regiment (Wellington Mounted Rifles) on Gallipoli. He commanded the regiment during the last 2 months on Gallipoli, including the evacuation and continued in command in Egypt until the appointment of Col. Meldrum in February 1916. Samuel was then appointed to command the Base Training Camp at Moascar, a position he held until invalided back to NZ. (MID) in July 1917. He was suffering from a "dilated heart", a condition resulting from a rescue of a pilot and attempt to salvage a British aircraft that had made a forced descent into the sea near El Ariah.
